There is a distinct sensation I feel remembering the sleepy morning walk down the carpeted hallway, through the den, and into the kitchen at my grandparents’. The cuckoo clock ticking, the air filled with the smell of the old books in the den, and the murmur of early morning voices beyond the hallway door. You could always count on a pot of coffee being on and biscuits in the oven when you awoke. It turns out that biscuits from the frozen section at Kroger that come in a plastic bag with no branding are the best ones you can find — who knew? It was mandatory that you use too much butter on that flaky biscuit and put half and half in the coffee that you pour into a tiny teacup from Grandmother’s grand selection in the china cabinet. Grandmother would sit in the same spot at the breakfast table, warming her coffee on the small mug hotplate my dad thoughtfully bought her for Christmas one year. I have one now — it lives in the studio — and I think of her whenever I use it. She always did like her coffee piping hot.
