Goldfish Pond — 16x20 Original Painting
Goldfish Pond — 16x20 Original Painting
In the backyard of my grandparents’ home in Oxford, Mississippi, there was a quaint little goldfish pond complete with a small rock waterfall and a plethora of large goldfish my grandparents had raised from tiny little things. We would spend summer afternoons on our visits out there with a bamboo stick for a rod and orange twine for a line. I don’t remember catching anything, but I remember the excitement at the idea that I might. I have, in more recent years, imagined that my grandmother had that pond put in when they bought their modest midcentury ranch in Oxford; they had, after all, spent time in Japan when my granddad was stationed there during his military days, and the koi ponds they saw living in Tokyo must have been charming. Whether or not this is the case, it is sweet to imagine it so and think of her creating her own little zen garden in their beautiful, tree-filled yard.
