My kind grandmother endured countless hours of sitting in the backyard being served “tea” (a cup full of gravel from their garden) in plastic teacups when my twin sister and I were little. Pretend teatime was always more fun at our grandparents’ house in Mississippi, as our own backyard was filled with different adventures. Grandmother would patiently sip at the cup of small rocks and entertain our tiny imaginations, an image that has been fixed in my mind for years. Her quiet playfulness has always stuck with me. She was never loud or extravagant; she was kind and thoughtful, her sweet Mississippi accent slow and steady like molasses as she thanked us for her pretend tea. She was nothing short of marvelous.
